You work hard to keep yourself healthy and fit. Whether it’s following a meal plan or finding the latest and greatest exercise equipment, you’ve got it covered. But what about when it comes to the air you breathe? Indoor plants are superstars when it comes to detoxifying the air inside your home, but they also help transform a bland house into your own private oasis. Find out which indoor plants you should add to your space to breathe easy and find your best energy yet.

1. Aloe Vera Plant

Aloe vera is a handy plant to keep around. If you’ve ever had a nasty sunburn or cooking burn and used fresh aloe (rather than the mystery bottled stuff), you know exactly how handy it is. Anytime you need some aloe, just grab a stem off your plant, slit it open, and squish out the fresh aloe for instant and effective relief. It’s chock full of skin hydrating and repairing ingredients like minerals, antioxidants, and anti-inflammatories, but that’s not all it does. You can also eat or drink aloe vera (a delicious way to stay hydrated), use it as a general moisturizer for your skin, and of course, purify your home’s air. Keeping an aloe plant in your bedroom will not only help you get a better and purer sleep, but it’ll give you peace of mind knowing that you’ve basically got a regenerating first aid kit at the ready.

2. English Ivy

English ivy, aside from being an incredibly gorgeous house plant, is also the very best plant at absorbing formaldehyde (NASA scientists said it, so you know it’s true). That alone should be enough to warrant some English ivy in every nook and cranny, but it’s also a positive plant to keep around. It can grow pretty much no matter how terrible you are at keeping plants alive, which is kind of endearing. After all, having plants around is super beneficial to your mental health—even better if you know you’re not going to kill it! Find other self-care tips here.

3. Snake Plant

Another great plant to keep around is the snake plant. This stunning, tropical indoor plant makes every single room look better, but it’s particularly beneficial in the bedroom. While most plants absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen during the day, the snake plant gets busy at night to give you clean, fresh air as you sleep for your best and healthiest snooze yet.

4. Red-Edged Dracaena

Transform the energy of your home with the mesmerizing red-edged dracaena. Not only does it bring an energizing pop of color into your home, but it can also grow as high as your ceilings. This makes it the perfect indoor plant to help decorate and fill your home in a meaningful, vibrant way. Plus, this tropical plant is super effective at removing toxins from the air like xylene, trichloroethylene and formaldehyde that can sneak into your home through lacquers, varnishes and gas (because detoxing isn’t just about a lemon water cleanse).

5. Peace Lily

Bring some life to your rooms with the lovely peace lily plant. This low-maintenance plant thrives in cooler temperatures and shade so you can use it to brighten up the darkest corners of your home, but it brings a whole host of other benefits too. These flower-like plants with almost nonstop blooms help eradicate scary chemicals like benzene and trichloroethylene that come from paint, furniture varnish, gas, tobacco smoke, detergent, rubber, synthetic fibers, and even more everyday items. Plus, the reason they’re called peace lilies is that the bloom looks like a flag of peace, and that’s a boatload of positive energy for you and your home right there.

Might be nice to add a warning that every single plant on this list is toxic to house pets.
